Structure of Methanesulfonyl Chloride

Sulfonyl chlorides are important reagents. These reagents react with alcohols to form so-called sulfonate esters. The sulfonate esters are easily subjected to nucleophilic substitution even under mild conditions. The para-toluenesulfonic esters are particularly useful and those are called the "tosylates".
