Structure of Pyridine

The chlorination of alcohols with thionyl chloride is carried out in the solvent pyridine. The bonding in pyridine greatly resembles that of benzene. Since one CH group is replaced by one =N- atom, pyridine features a lone pair and acts as a base. Pyridine adds acids to form pyridinium salts.
