Structure of Phenanthrene

The fusion of two benzenes can only be done in one way and naphthalene results. Fusion of another benzene to naphtalene can occur in several ways depending on which of the double bonds in naphthalene is used for the fusion. Fusion with the 1,2-bond gives phenanthrene.
