Structure of Acetic Anhydride

Anhydrides formally result from the condensation of two carboxylic acids: R-CO-OH + HO-CO-R" ---(-water)---> R-CO-O-CO-R'. Parallel alignment of the dipole moments of the two carbonyl groups would give rise to strong repulsion and is avoided.
