Nitration of Acetanilide!

The oxidation of the amino group presents a problem in the nitration of aniline. To protact the amino group from that faith, one reacts the amine with acetyl chloride to form the acetanilide. The acetanilide can be nitrated without oxidation of the anilide. After nitration has occurred, in the para-position, the protecting group can be removed with dilute acid.
