Nitration of Aniline?

What is the problem with te nitration of aniline? The amino group should be activating the aromatic ring toward electrophilic aromatic substitution. So what could go wrong? Well, the nitration is carried out under oxidizing conditions and the amino group would undergo oxidation while nitration occurs. The result would be a messy mixture. Obviously, then, what is needed is a protection strategy that keeps the amino group from being oxidized.
