There is a hard way and there is a smart way to prepare triptycene from anthracene. The hard way involves the reaction of anthracene with 1,4-benzoquinone and subsequent functional group modifications. Once benzynes were discovered, it was suddenly possible to make triptycene in a one step reaction. See discussion in the text.
