The radical site C-atom remains almost planar and approximately sp² hybridized with the unpaired electron residing essentially in the p-atomic orbital. Note, however, that this description clearly is becoming approximate. When the radical is viewed side on, it becomes apparent that the H-atom at the radical site is bent toward being more equatorial than axial.
