Evaluation by Group 1
(1) Topic Selection: 20 Points (0-20)
The selection relates well to college students and ties into organic Chemistry
well with fermentation and the subject of alcohol (ethanol).
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 7 Points (0-10)
The article was not published in a high quality paper nor was it within
the time restrictions, but it was relevant and interesting to the age group
it targets.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The editorial comments help clarify the fermentation process and describes
more about it.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
9 Points (0-10)
The key organic issue was made clear- ethanol and fermentation- and the
process was described thoroughly.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 20 Points (0-20)
The links are all relevant to the topic and show the organic perspective
of the article. The links helped to learn more about the process
and supported their editorial comment well.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 8 Points (0-10)
The six questions were diverse great questions, but there was not a PSP
question.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
9 Points (0-10)
They were good quality questions, especially on the organic side, but may
have been too long, although deciding which one to leave out would have
been difficult considering their context.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
This really is an issue that relates to college students and which ties
into organic chemistry well.
Evaluation by Group 2
(1) Topic Selection: 20 Points (0-20)
We like beer. Brewing is an interesting subject for college students.
It is very well suited for our age group.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 9 Points (0-10)
Good information, but the article was not from a high quality news source.
The article was not published in the past year, but since beer-making has
been going on for centuries, the info hasn't really changed.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The organization is immaculate. We liked the variety of links.
Great English, playas!
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
8 Points (0-10)
The organic issues are hazy. Specific chemical reactions are not
discussed.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 17 Points (0-20)
The links are well embedded in the comments. The "home-brewing" link
was especially informative. The "secondary fermentation" link was
about wine and did not contain pertinent information. The "MADD"
link was a nice touch.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 7 Points (0-10)
Not a great variety in the types of questions. There were six questions,
so one of them should have been a PSP question.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
9 Points (0-10)
The questions have good content and emphasize the main points of the brewing
process.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
Overall-- a very good project. With a few minor, minor adjustments
it will be perfect for publication.

They have shown the science side of an every process that many take for
granted.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
10 Points (0-10)
They definitely showed how organic chemistry influences beer making.....
and it relates to the alcohol chemistry that we have been spending so much
time on.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 20 Points (0-20)
The links were very informative, and also developed the topic very well.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 7 Points (0-10)
There was not enough variety of questions. examples....PSP,FAR
(7) Quality of the Questions:
9 Points (0-10)
They were very good........ but not much variety.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
Overall this was very good.......... i don't think any of us knew the intricacies
of beer making.

(1) Topic Selection: 18 Points (0-20)
well, being in college, beer is a very common thing among students. although
this topic is pertinent to a broad audience, it really isn's something
that would benefit our lives; brewing beer that is.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 10 Points (0-10)
this article was not published in a high quality newspaper, but maybe the
HOMEBREWING newspaper is a good reference if you want to take up home brewing.
none of us are experts on it, so we don't know
(3) Quality of the Editorial
There are several grammatical errors, but it is written in a language easy
to understand. the thoughts are also sort of jumbled, but nothing
too severe that couldn't be fixed
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
10 Points (0-10)
the organic issue seemed to be one of primary and secondary fermentation.
the processes and the compounds involved in these processes are also expressed
in detail
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 17 Points (0-20)
we never knew that home brewing was such a hot topic on the web, but we
guess so now. the group could've added more links that were pertinent
to chemistry (i.e. sugars and ethanol) instead of so many about home brewing
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 8 Points (0-10)
yes, there were 5 questions that vary in all categories of the topic.
there were also 3 questions about primary fermentation, there could've
been less
(7) Quality of the Questions:
10 Points (0-10)
the questions definitely pertained to the topic. there was no questions
that were far fetched and you could answer them in a reasonable time period
by reading the article and using chem finder.
(8) Overall Impression. 8
Points (0-10)
overall, this was an entertaining article to read. we didn't know
that home brewing was so popular. although it was interesting to
read and informative, we believe that it would need a little more work
done on the links and the information they contain. overall, though,
the project was a definite relief from the usual ozone projects (of which
we evaluated 3 of them). very light-hearted!
