(1) Topic Selection: 19 Points
(0-20)
The topic they chose was about the health risks of pollutants in our everyday
lives. Their topic was very relavent with organic chemistry. Some
of the pollutants in their article were benzene, chloroform, polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbon. These molecules have all been mentioned in
this semesters chemistry course making this topic very relavent.
This topic is very good because it not only pertains to chemistry but to
everyone else who exposed to these pollutants. Excellent topic!
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 9 Points (0-10)
They chose Scientific America which is a good quality source. There article
was very relevent(Febuary 98). The article was interesting enough to keep
you reading.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The editorial comment was of fair length and captured the main point of
the article very well. The editorial comment was written well and it was
organized to fit the articles main points.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
9 Points (0-10)
The organic chemistry in this article was great. They had excellent
links to all their pollutants(chloroform, benzene, etc) that explained
exactly what the chemical was, where it could be found, and loads of other
useful information about the pollutants.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 18 Points (0-20)
As I mentioned above, the links were very useful in finding out more information
about the chemicals. There were other links like American Lung Association
that were very credible. Overall their link selection was good.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 9 Points (0-10)
There were five questions total and they fulfilled the requirements for
different categories. They also included a controversial question
that could have different answers because it was opinion based.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
8 Points (0-10)
All the questions were reasonable and could be answered in a fair amount
of time. They all seemed to flow well with the article.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
Yes, This group project did very well. The article was from Scientific
America which also had its own web sites making it a very good article.
The article was very relavent to organic chemistry but also to a broader
spectrum of people, including anyone concerned about their health due to
hazardous chemicals. In summary this group worked hard on their project
and should be considered for publication.

Evaluation by Group 30
(1) Topic Selection: 20 Points (0-20)
Good topic with a lot of organic chemistry in it. It's an interesting
topic that is of concern to everybody.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 8 Points (0-10)
The newspaper article was too long, although it had a lot of good information
and it was interesting. Also, the article contained interesting links
and pictures. The source was very credible on a chemistry basis.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The Editorial discusses major points and it was easy to read and be interested
in. It was written well and clarified the issues presented.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
7 Points (0-10)
They could have gone more in depth with the chemical analysis of alkyl
halides pertaining to the topic. It wasn't related back to the chapter
as well as it could have been.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 18 Points (0-20)
The links were very credible, and imbedded well into the article.
They provided a further explanation of the issue. It needs links
to structures to enhance understanding.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 8 Points (0-10)
They need to have more variation in the types of questions. It would
help to have more chemically related questions, possibly a substitution
or elimination question.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
7 Points (0-10)
The answer to question 4 doesn't seem to match, and doesn't make sense.
What is the real question. A good philosophical question
(8) Overall Impression. 7
Points (0-10)
If they found a shorter article and changed minor things like question
4 and added more information relating to Chapter 6, this would be a very
useful assignment
Their score was 85%

The topic is very relevant, because it brings to light a suject that affects
everyone. Our homes are supposed to be a safe place, but we may have
to rethink that line of thought with these studies on inhome carcinogens.

But, it was a little too long and was kind of dry.
