Evaluation by Group 30
(1) Topic Selection: 13 Points (0-20)
The topic does not seem to be prevalent. Dieting as a topics is of
interest to a broad audience, but the use of Fen-phen has been retracted
for some time now, being off the market for more than a year
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 4 Points (0-10)
The article was not published in a newspaper (ABC News), but hte article
could be found in the Associated Press. There seems to be some confusion
over the exact date of the article due to the FDA's apparent retraction
in 1997.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
Some grammatical errors made the aritcle hard to understand and follow.
For instance, the introductory paragraph. For the most part, the
editorial was a summary of the article. It did not place the article
in a greater context.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
6 Points (0-10)
There was not a clear explanation of the key organic topic. Explanation
on a chemical level was not provided.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 18 Points (0-20)
The links are pretty good, except the retraction link. It did not
work.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 8 Points (0-10)
not a lot of variety. There appears to be two philisophical questions.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
5 Points (0-10)
The questions did not help relate the article to applications of organic
chemistry.
(8) Overall Impression. 5
Points (0-10)
The editorial comments and questions need work. At this stage, the
news item is not fit for publication.
Evaluation by Group 31

Great topic selection with interesting information on fen-phens.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 10 Points (0-10)
Very high quality publication that was written in association with the
associated press. Author seemed very qualified.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
Excellent job. They summarized the main points of the article as
well as showing the weakness of the study by the Mayo clinic.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
9 Points (0-10)
The group did a good job presenting the background information and chemical
issues of fen-phen.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 17 Points (0-20)
Most of the links were of good quality with excellent content and sources.
However, one link was down and another was possibly biased since it was
from a law firm looking for possible clients.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 8 Points (0-10)
The group did have 5 questions as requested. However, some of the
questions seemed very similar to one another. More variability would
have been better
(7) Quality of the Questions:
10 Points (0-10)
Even though some were similar, they were very good questions. They
were written clearly and focused on the main points of the article.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
Very nice news item. But, could use a few minor adjustments according
to the assignment.
