Evaluation by Group 1
(1) Topic Selection: 18 Points (0-20)
Direct relation between topic and chemistry. It is easily relatable,
especially to those who live or are familiar with the affected area mentioned
in the article.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 9 Points (0-10)
Article was up-to-date and adequate in length.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
Very informative and full of chemical background. However, it seemed
to be another article rather than merely an extension of the article.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
10 Points (0-10)
Very sufficient in mentioning and explaining important compounds.
Chemical background was the strong aspect of this project.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 18 Points (0-20)
The links available provide plenty of information, but perhaps more links
are needed for an even better understanding.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 10 Points (0-10)
Fulfilled all the requirements of different categories and number of questions.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
9 Points (0-10)
The questions are directly related to the topic. One of the questions
seemed quite lengthy and difficult to solve without the help of the links.
(8) Overall Impression. 10
Points (0-10)
This was well- organized and informative, suitable for publishing after
minor adjustments. It relates to the current world and the information
is well- qualified.
Evaluation by Group 2
(1) Topic Selection: 20 Points (0-20)
The topic of the watchamacallit's article is very relevant. Global
Warming should be of concern to all of us. The topic is directly related
to organic chemistry.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 10 Points (0-10)
The article does not drag on, but it makes its point clear and precisely.
References in the article where made to PhD's, a federal study, and the
American Chemical Society, so all facts should be relevant.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The Editorial was extremely helpful. Its expansion on the contribution
of N2O made by the agricultural industry was helpful and it made the chemical
information more clear. It was well written, and a lot of thought
was put into it. It was too long, though. They could have done
just a good of a job by condensing it a small amount. Reading it
was a chore - due to its length
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
10 Points (0-10)
The content of the article seemed to be directly related to organic chemistry,
so it would be easy to expand upon that. They provided essential
information in either their links or editorial in order to prove chemical
processes
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 19 Points (0-20)
The links where very helpful and very many. They strongly supported the
article. They where all of a good source, and we did most of our
learning from these links. We didn't learn from all of the links,
although. Three of them where provided in the article, so by putting
them in the editorial was redundant.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 10 Points (0-10)
There are 5 questions and they are diverse, but still within the topic.
There is a PSP question at the end
(7) Quality of the Questions:
10 Points (0-10)
They are all good questions. The simple first two, make up for the
hard third and fourth questions. Thus providing a good balance.
A person could probably answer the questions in a few minutes after studying
the article.
(8) Overall Impression. 9
Points (0-10)
This is a very usefull project. The only thing that we could think
to make it better would be to shorten the editorial, and make it more to
the point. Besides that, it was a very impressive project
Evaluation by Group 3
(1) Topic Selection: 20 Points
(0-20)
Ozone depletion is an important topic in our society today. Thus
it is appealing to any audience. N2O has a definite relationship to organic
chemistry and chemistry in general. We feel that their topic is of
interest and was a good choice.
(2) Newspaper and Article
Selection: 10 Points (0-10)
This article was very short and to the point in the ideas presented and
we felt that the article came from a very reliable source. Although
we do not know who the author was, we feel that he or she definitely knew
what they were writing about and were able to communicate very well their
ideas. The article was very recent and was a good choice for this
project.
(3) Quality of the Editorial
The editorial comments did allow us to understand the topic prior to reading
the actual article. It was well written, without any grammatical errors,
and was easily understood. They did not use language that would be
unfamiliar to one who did not know organic chemistry. The editorial
simply did an excellent job of creating interest in the topic and explaining
that in a clear fashion.
(4) Organic Chemistry Content:
8 Points (0-10)
The key issues were definitely outlined in this editorial, and sufficient
background was provided for a reader to apply. The compounds in nitrous
oxides and all reactions related were fully detailed and was understandable.
The pertinent references, however, were not even present and one would
only know that it is related to Chapter 4. For this we took the two
points.
(5) Selection and Quality
of the Links: 20 Points (0-20)
The links were very relavents and were of good quality in the editorial.
They were all very reliable and from very reputable sources. These
links also were helpful in allowing us to understand reactions and mechanisms
we were not familiar with. They did an excellent job with this and
we found nothing wrong. We did think, though that perhaps a photolysis
link should be added to the editorial.
(6) Format, Number and Types
of Questions: 10 Points (0-10)
They met all requirements for this section and they had all needed.
There was nothing we felt we should say.
(7) Quality of the Questions:
10 Points (0-10)
All of the questions were very reasonable and understandable. They
met the central theme of the editorial head on and were very good.
It was also fairly easy to work the problems in a reasonable amount of
time. They did a good job here.
(8) Overall Impression. 10
Points (0-10)
We felt as a group that this editorial was very well done and was just
as good as many of Glaser's own editorials. For this we gave them
the full amount of points and felt that it was an excellent job and they
truly worked at this accomplishment.
Good Job!

8. Overall Impression 8/10
The overall article, questions,
and comments lack enthusiasm.

Job well done but the editorial comments would need to be shortened
Good Work. Interesting topic. We all learned alittle new info.
