You are expected to be familiar with the material described in chapter 18, the associated problem assignments, and the associated GTQ worksheets. Material described in that chapter but omitted in lecture will not be pertinent to the test.

Specific Important Topics

Enols and Their Reactions
Enolization (typical pKa values of A&Ks, mechanisms)
Halogenation of A&Ks (in basic and acidic media)
Alkylation of A&Ks (including in particular the use of enamines)
Aldol Condensation and related reaction (central topic!)

Chemistry of alpha,beta-Unsaturated Aldehydes and Ketones.
The conceptual differences between 1,2- and 1,4-addition with particular focus on:
(a) 1,2- and 1,4-additions of organometallic compounds
(b) Michael Reaction
(c) Robinson Annulation

Note that there will be synthesis as well as disconnection problems.
