NOTES Experiment 11: Synthesis of 1-Phenylethanol: A Grignard Reaction 1. Work in pairs. 2. Two important points for a successful start of a Grignard reaction: a. A very dry apparatus, which is accomplished by a thorough flaming-out process. b. A clean active surface of the magnesium metal. We will try the following: - Thoroughly crush the magnesium metal in a mortar and pestel before adding to the reaction flask. - If the reaction does not start, your TA will add a few drops of 1,2-dibromoethane. This compound reacts rapidly with Mg to form ethylene, and thus provides a clean surface for the reaction to start. 3. Keep a beaker with ice water in your hood to control the reaction if necessary. 4. Text reference: Carey 5/e, Chapter 14, p. 595 - 598.
